About Pack 442

About Pack 442Pack 442 is a close-knit Cub Scout pack for everyone in grades 1 through 5. We are chartered by Friendswood United Methodist Church, in Friendswood, TX. We are part of the Northern Star District, and the Bay Area Council.

We are fortunate to have lots of experienced leaders. Our leaders are dedicated to making scouting a fun, educational, and rewarding experience for your child and family. Our pack stresses qualities such as respect, honesty, and camaraderie.

While our focus is on providing a fulfilling scouting experience for our children, we also offer many family-oriented events as well, such as family camping trips  and outings.

Fun Meetings!

Pack 442 is comprised of smaller groups of six to eight scouts each called “dens.” Scouts usually meet with their den two or three times each month to work toward completing requirements needed to earn their next rank in scouting. Most of the scouting experience occurs at these “den meetings,” which are presided over by “Den Leaders.” The Den Leaders determine when and where their dens meet, but it is usually at a fixed time and place. Because different dens meet at different times and locations, parents can choose the den that best suits their schedules. Den meetings are about one-hour long.

From September to May, the whole pack (i.e., all of the scouts in Pack 442, regardless of rank) meets once per month at a “pack meeting.” At pack meetings, we play games, hear super-cool guest speakers, recognize scout achievements, and generally get together and have fun! The Cubmaster presides over the Pack Meeting, which is usually on the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 7:00 PM to about 8:15 PM.

More than just fun meetings!

In addition to the den activities, the pack holds or participates in numerous activities throughout the year, including:

  • Summer swim party (June)
  • 4th of July Parade
  • Summer skate party (August)
  • Space Derby
  • Fall family campout
  • Pinewood Derby
  • Christmas caroling
  • Various service projects including Christmas Joy – sponsoring a family, and Scouting for Food
  • Blue & Gold Banquet
  • Spring family campout
  • Rank overnights at places like Downtown Aquarium, Tall Ship Elisa, Lexington Aircraft Carrier, Zoo, Children’s Museum, and Space City Houston

But wait, there’s more!

Throughout the year, there are also several District and Council-level events that scouts can attend, including day camps, weekend overnight camps, week-long overnight camps, and Cub-O-Ree.

Everybody has time for scouting

Worried that, with everything else you and your child have going on, scouting will take up too much time? Don’t be! You can adjust the level of your scout’s activities according to your personal needs. There’s no pressure to earn rank each year (though we strive to help each scout do so) and there is no attendance requirement. If your scout needs to miss a den meeting due to a sports or other conflict, he or she can simply complete a fun make-up activity at home and it will count toward earning his rank (although, again, there’s no requirement they do so). And if you want to fully immerse your scout in the scouting world, we can certainly accommodate that too!

Dues

Dues are $36 per year. This covers your scout’s membership in the Boy Scouts of America and a subscription to Boy’s Life magazine. None of this money goes to Pack 442, so like other packs each year our scouts sell popcorn to raise money to cover expenses. This is the pack’s only fundraiser and it teaches scouts how to be thrifty, which is part of the Scout Law. Scouts who do not meet the relatively modest sales goal (around $300) may be asked to pay a prorated “buyout” amount (around $95). And depending on the success of the fundraiser, the pack may also assess unit dues. Whether the pack will need to assess unit dues is determined each year.
